Part of the Lesser Antilles in the southern Caribbean Sea
(north of Venezuela), Aruba is a paradise that attracts people
who can afford the luxurious lifestyle. While it's in the
Caribbean, Aruba is actually run by the Kingdom of the
Netherlands. The two main areas on this mid-sized island are the
northeast coast (and beaches) and the southwest beaches and
coast. Once you get to the island, it's small enough to be able
to see most of it even on a short trip. That said, the island is
still large enough that you won't feel "trapped" or too crowded.
Destinations in Aruba
Oranjestad - This is the
Capital of Aruba and is a decent place to set-up your base of
operations while on the island.
California Lighthouse -
Found on the northern tip of the island, this is a great place
to see the surrounding views.
Casibari Rock & Ayo Rock
Formations - If you enjoy hiking and climbing, you're going to
want to check out these locations.
Aruba Ostrich Farm - Aruba
and ostriches might not be connected in your mind, but if you
want to see something different while on the island, check
this out.
Antilla Shipwreck - If you
snorkel (or want to learn) this is a good place to try it out.
Haystack Mountain - At the
center of the island, this 500 or so foot mountain gives great
views of the entire island.
Baby Beach - Located in
South Aruba, this beach was given its name because the water
for the most part is very shallow.
Noticed in Aruba
Because tourism plays such
a large part of the economy in Aruba, the people are generally
very polite to tourists. That said, you don't want to be "that
tourist" that is loud, obnoxious, and difficult to please.
You're in paradise - lighten up a little!
US currency is accepted
pretty much everywhere on the island, not making it necessary
to exchange your money once you arrive.
Shopping is good in Aruba,
but you'll want to check where items are made, especially in
certain shops.
Eating in Aruba can be an
adventure all on its own, especially if you enjoy sea food or
Caribbean cuisine. If local fare isn't for you, there are many
chain restaurants throughout the island.
As for places to stay,
there are many great resorts and hotels in Aruba. You'll want
to pick one close to where you think you're going to spend the
most time during your time on the island.
For the most part, it's as safe to travel around (even at
night) as it is in any other resort location in the world. That
said, you'll want to stay away from the few industrial areas
after the sun goes down, but there's really no reason for you to
be there anyway. There are many places for you to see on such a
small island, and many activities to keep you busy, no matter
what you like doing. If you do go, remember to respect the
country and the natural beauty - in other words, don't litter or
otherwise harm the environment. This makes sure many others will
be able to enjoy this magical place for many decades to come.
